St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto opened the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute in May 2011. The centre is one of only a few in the world specifically designed to bring together researchers, educators and clinicians. The nine-storey building designed by Jack Diamond, principal at Diamond and Schmitt Architects, actively promotes knowledge exchange through multi-storey lounges with fireplaces, an elegant wishbone staircase and a double helix-inspired glass and steel bridge connecting to the hospital. The lab space is infused with natural light and a glass curtain wall creates a visibly accessible connection into the world of medical research for the community at large.
