In the early 80's, VCR's were nothing of affordable. Very few had the privilege to even rent one! They were expensive. In 1985, I got my first VCR. My mom bought us a VCR for Christmas 1985. A family VCR. I LOVED IT! Mom paid $228 at Zodys in 1985.
The common features they offered were 14 day 2 event, or 14 day 4 event timers. So you can set the VCR to record your TV show while you are away. Another common feature was 4 head or 2 head models. The fancy 4 head models had things like slow motion. These were very expensive then. Some VCRs offered remote controls, some did not. while still others offer a partial function remote, typically to operate tape player only, but not the tuner.
Also, up until the mid 80's, we had two type of VCRs to choose from. They were VHS or Beta. But at the time VHS was the prefered format to get. Since the tapes offered more recording time. And I felt the cassettes looked cooler.
