Former AirAsia CFO Vijay Gopalan has attributed the recent IndiGo flight disruptions to the DGCA’s revised Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) rules issued last year. The regulations, implemented in two phases, increased mandatory pilot rest periods from 36 to 48 hours and introduced other operational changes. Gopalan highlighted that airlines cannot quickly expand their pilot pools, as recruitment involves notice periods, type-rating, training, and meeting minimum flying-hour requirements. He suggested that these constraints, combined with the stricter rules, are largely responsible for scheduling issues and flight delays, rather than operational inefficiencies on the part of the airline.
