Aged Care and Sports Minister Anika Wells says the new national sporting integrity unit has received 1300 "athlete-led" complaints at its soft launch.

The new national sporting integrity unit will sit under Sporting Integrity Australia and offers an anonymous hotline for athletes.

"What we know from soft launch of the 1300 number is that they expected about 60 complaints to come in, they got 1300 complaints," Ms Wells told Sky News Australia.

"Firstly, we know this is rife. Secondly, we know a bit more about where these complaints are coming from.

"Thirdly, we know that 117 of those matters were ultimately referred to law enforcement for further action."
