Conventional drilling is synonymous with overbalanced drilling where the drilling fluid exerts a hydrostatic pressure equal to or greater than the formation fluid (oil/water/gas) pressure of the formation. Underbalanced drilling (UBD) may then be simply defined as the opposite of overbalanced drilling, in that the adjacent wellbore pressure is reduced to a pressure below that of the reservoir pore pressure. Thus it must be concluded that formations drilled in an underbalanced fashion must have self-supporting integrity.
The application and properly executed technology of underbalanced drilling offers numerous potential advantages over conventional drilling techniques. Some of these advantages are as follows:
Increase in productivity due to a reduction in formation damage
Minimization/elimination of lost circulation material and associated cost
Elimination of potential for differential sticking (true underbalanced conditions prevail)
Increase in the rate of penetration (chip hold down effect reduced)
Eliminates the need for post well reservoir stimulation and clean-ups
Increase in bit life (less friction) and hence fewer bit trips
Reduced cost of expensive drilling mud programs
Provides access to severely depleted formations
Identification of fractures through production/pressure monitoring
Permits production while drilling and “early production” revenue
Potential for increased safety in high risk well control situations
Positive environmental impact from the closed loop system (no earthen pits)
