ASTM Ring and Ball Softening Point Test
this is the astm version of the test, the water is not stirred during this test, in the British Standard version the water in the beaker is stirred.
This test was observed in an automatic machine, when the second of the two disks of bitumen falls the specified distance (25 mm) a light gate is broken and the device records the temperature of the water at that time, for a successful test, there must not be a difference of more than 1 degree Celsius between the two specimens. The average of the two temperatures is recorded as the softening point.
