Today we take a look at the performance of this $30 pc in gaming and workstation tasks. In this build is a single core pentium 4 clocked at 3 ghz, 2gb ram, and an ati/amd HD 4850. The games tested were Half life 2, grand theft auto 3 / san andreas, cinebench r15, minecraft, far cry, call of duty 2, star wars battlefront.

Also, I didnt pay for any of these computer parts, but I researched their prices across multiple used item markets and this was about as cheaply a near-identical configuration could be made.

Hello everybody and today we'll be taking a look at one of my more, uh, dangerous computers in terms of being a fire hazard, the box computer. Now, why is the perfectly good computer in a box, you ask, well, this was a project for school some years ago and this was the easiest and arguably safest way to transfer it. However, a while back I dismantled it, but while I rebuild it I'd like to talk about the specifications of and unexpected difficulties in assembling this build..
Inside this lga 775 computer build you'll find an intel pentium 4 631 that was released back in 2006 and was intended as a decent solution for a midrange computer. It has one core clocked at 3 ghz, two threads, and a 2 MB L2 Cache all built upon the 65 nanometer process. Back in the early 2000s it would have a decent cpu, running windows xp and doing some lighter tasks, but in 2020 it could hardly run windows 10. The graphics card, however, is by the strongest part of the system. The one installed in this computer is an ati hd 4850. It has 800 cores, 40 TMUS, 16 ROPS, and 512 mb of ddr3 memory with a 256 bit bus width and 956 million Transistors all built upon the 55 nanometer process utilizing the terascale architecture. The reason i'm using this card and not another, slower one that would be more appropriate for the system is 1.) because i don't have any slower cards and 2.), today i wanted to focus more on the performance of the CPU from this build and to do so its best to make it the bottleneck of the system. This was kinda achieved, however, since the motherboard only had 2 ram slots and the largest ddr2 modules i had was of only 1gb each. And, last but not least, the storage solution i used in this computer was a good old 200gb western digital wd 2000 IDE hard drive. Surprisingly though, load times weren't as bad as i expected them to be, but still, transferring files and starting windows did take quite some time. In fact, extracting cinebench took a total of 2 minutes to do, which is about 1 min 30 seconds longer than I've ever dealt with before. But, all in all, reinstalling windows did not take extremely long and I got the system up and running in no time at all. Also, if your observant, you'll notice that on the corner of the motherboard lies a few sata ports, where i could have plugged in some sata laptop hard drives, but, i felt that an old IDE one was a better fit for this computer considering the age of the rest of the components.
And it may seem so, but the setup of this computer actually wasn't nearly smooth at all. To start, the first 4850 I plugged into this system just up and died. I mean, I'm none too gentle with my older hardware, but this card just blatantly refused any digital output at all and I was sad to see it go since I'd been planning a 3 way crossfire with this card. Also, when i first turned this computer on after two years of dormancy, for some reason i thought it was just ready to go and after a minute of running i was like, hmmmm, that's weird, why the cpu fan running at like 10000 rpm. So, being the cautious, scientific person I am , I poked it with a screwdriver, and it turns out that when I last used it I unscrewed the heatsink and left it resting on top of the cup. This, was very bad for the system and i immediately cut power and screwed it back in. Additionally, the old harddrive for this build had windows already installed on it. However, it was locked by a password which id long since forgotten so i ended up just using a new hard drive because the usb stick in which i have my password cracking software installed refused to be recognized as a bootable device within the computer's bios and i didnt have any cds to burn the program onto so i just said to heck with it and grabbed the 200gb hard drive currently installed in the box pc.
So yeah, the setup of this computer was far from flawless but at least I got it up and running. So, how about we head into some various benchmarks of this computer
The first test consists of the computer's general usability on the Windows 10 operating system. And, in short, it was abysmal. There was severe input lag, the usage animations were extremely slow, and simply opening the file explorer saw the pentium 4 pinned at 100% usage
