Firefighters continued Tuesday to battle a fire at a firewood company on Purgatory Road that started Monday night.

The state Fire Mobilization Task Force was called to assist firefighters who had been on the scene all night fighting fires in four buildings and multiple stacks of cordwood at West End Firewood, 496 Purgatory Road, according to Jennifer Mieth, a spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office. Additional manpower from the task force has been called three times overnight and Tuesday morning.

Mieth said one person was arrested for interfering with firefighting efforts. She said the cause of the fire is being investigated. She said an investigator from the fire marshal’s office was in Northbridge on Tuesday assisting local investigators in determining how the fire started.

Monday night, the low clouds allowed the tree-high flames to light up the night sky as smoke poured to the south. The fire covered a wide swath of land, and motorists slowed and even stopped on nearby Route 146 to watch the fire.
