John (or Mad Jack) Mytton was born on 30th September 1796, the son of John Mytton and Sarah Harriet.
His family had been landowners in Shropshire for over 500 years.
Moving to Halston Hall, Whittington in 1549.
His father died when Jack was two years old, thus he inherited the family seat of Halston Hall, which was then valued at £60,000.
A significant amount at the time.
In addition, he received an annual income of £10,000 from rental and agricultural estates of more than 53,000ha at Dinas Mawddwy.
Mad Jack Mytton rode into a dinner party in his drawing room on his pet bear.
He was dressed in full hunting outfit, including spurs with which he pricked the bear. Angered the bear promptly and understandably turned round and bit his leg right through.
He is said to have driven his carriage at high speed.
Whilst trying out a new horse in tandem (one horse in front of another, which requires great skill) Mytton asked the horse dealer if he thought the horse was ‘a good timber-jumper’, a requisite for horses that would hunt across country.
The bemused dealer didn’t know.
‘Then we’ll try him,’ said Mytton, making the unfortunate horse jump a turnpike gate while still attached, leaving the second horse and demolished vehicle on the far side of the gate.
In 1826, whilst staying at the Bedford Hotel in Leomington Spa.
As the result of a wager, Mytton is said to have ridden his horse ‘Mad Tom’ up the grand staircase of the hotel, into the first-floor dining room and then to have jumped over the dining table and the assembled diners and then jumped through the open window into the parade below.
In 1819, following a family tradition he stood for the Shrewsbury Parliamentary seat, as a Tory.
He secured his seat spending £10,000 by offering voters £10 notes.
He only spent just 30 minutes in the House of Commons in June 1819.
Such honesty making him unsuitable for politics and in 1820 he declined to stand at the next election.
Over the course of fifteen years he managed to spend his all inheritance and then fell into debt.
In 1833, Mytton returned to England, where, still unable to pay his debts, he ended up in Southwark Jail.
He died there in 1834, of delirium tremors.
And was buried in the vault of the private chapel at Halston on 9th April, supposedly with his pet bear.
Three thousand people attended his funeral.
