When I was printing out all of my music, I listened to recordings of them to get a general idea of what they'll be like. Personally, I find it a lot more fun to go in somewhat blind to these events. The most I'll do is look over the music, and there's nothing ever too crazy or weird that I'll have to play (especially this time around, where the music/part for the trombones was relatively easy and the 3rd trombone itself was of course the easiest). In the professional world, that'd probably get you murdered or something. I dunno. I'm more focused on my band's assessment music anyway, and with how easy I saw the music was, I think it's more entertaining to do a blind any% run of the event. The most joy I probably have in band is sightreading music. I like thinking on the spot like. It's a lot better compared to 3 hours later into rehearsal, where the conductor is doing reps of That One Woodwind Run(s)TM and meanwhile I'm looking at my dotted half notes and if I even wanted to practice another part while I waited, I didn't have much to do. ACTUALLY, that's a lie, because whenever our conductor spent time fixing something, I'd have my sheet music out for THIS song. Specifically the part in the middle at 3:34 , but eventually I got it down, so THEN i was basically doing nothing. See? that's pretty professional musician of me. I think. Anyways, when you listen to this song, the first part you'll notice are the crazy triplet eighth notes at the beginning, and I only call it "crazy" because i don't think ive had to double tongue (or triple tongue? is it?) for a piece like basically ever. I thought it would be very hard, but it ended up actually being quite fun. These were the highest notes I played all concert, and it was the melody too, which is a bonus.

it's a pretty good song. i think the song as a whole overall might be either my favorite or second favorite. probably close second? maybe. the section starting at 1:26 is fun and i hummed it a lot after the event. I think i liked it because the trombones had stuff to do, which is cool and all.

2:54 is probably the section we rehearsed the most. the actual hymn part itself at 4:36 is cool as well. Mr. Johnson printed out a separate piece of paper that the horns/euphs read off instead of from the actual piece? i don't remember/know why. It was funny because this paper was basically a copy of the director's score sheet (from whatever program he used to make it) and so it had EVERY PART on their and it was REALLY SMALL and took up so little of the paper. gavin like folded it in half to cover up half of the useless parts so he could see the euph part more clearer. that was kinda funny. speaking of GHS people, shoutout to Arkam whose french horn kept rapidly disassembling in an unscheduled fashion on thursday's read through.

also 3rd trombone is fun to play because you play the cooler parts of the harmony and it's fun to do that and it's also fun to play low notes.
