Two UC Berkeley students launched Nomadic Drones during California's catastrophic 2018 wildfire season with a simple question: what if drones could constantly monitor power lines to prevent disasters?

Their answer was a drone that never touches the ground.

The aircraft lands directly on high-voltage transmission lines and recharges itself by harvesting energy from the electromagnetic field surrounding the cables.

No charging stations, battery swaps, or ground support required.

The system works by perching on active power lines and using inductive charging to draw energy over roughly two hours, depending on current flow.

Once recharged, the drone inspects that section of line for damage, then flies to the next segment and repeats the process.

The result is autonomous, continuous grid monitoring with zero additional infrastructure.
