Snorkeling with Dozens of Manatees | Crystal River, Florida

After a cold snap during our recent visit to Florida, we visited Three Sisters Springs in the Crystal River area.

While the waters of the Gulf of Mexico cool below 72 degrees in the winter, the freshwater springs of interior Florida remain relatively warm. These springs become a warm refuge for manatees, which congregate by the hundreds during cold spells. We decided to visit the springs by inflatable paddleboard, and we snorkeled with nearly a hundred manatees. Even by Florida standards, it was an exceptional day on the water with once-in-a-lifetime manatee encounters.
