Depending on the walkways of the Ants and how many health kits you find, the NPCs might not survive that long. So your milage might vary. The Fusion Blaster can work wonders here, but if the NPCs die, you'll have problems getting close enough to the Hectors. Online, I always use 2x Fusion Blaster and wipe out the Hectors in the back, while Uwe uses a Railgun to kill the ones in front of the starting position.
In my old run, I stayed in the valley which wasn't a good idea.
