The loud, monotonous ‘coo-ee’ calls of the male Pacific Koel are a common sound in parts of eastern Australia in spring and summer. Male koels often sing for long periods, and their propensity to start very early in the mornng and go late into the night has earned them the title of one of Australia's most unloved bird sounds! Personally I think it's a pleasant, evocative sound of summer - as long as one is not belting it out outside my bedroom window at 5am!

The Pacific Koel (Eudynamys orientalis) calls in this video were recorded in New Guinea. This species is also known as the Eastern Koel, and is sometimes called the ‘Rain Bird’ or ‘Storm Bird’. Other species heard in this recording include Yellow-faced Myna, Golden Myna, Hooded Butcherbird, Pinon's imperial Pigeon, Coconut Lorikeet & Magnificent Riflebird.
