i've had the intention of writing another starlight song for a while now so i suppose that i'm happy to finally bring this idea to fruition

spoilers from Season 7 ahead (though i'd imagine that none of it is new to anyone):

i first started watching the show when Season 4 was airing, i think, so i've never really had the pleasure of slowly watching twilight's -- and the mane 6's -- growth. for this reason it's been especially heartwarming for me to watch starlight as she's developed and become more sure of herself: from her unruly beginnings to the first tentative steps of redemption, and from twilight's student to twilight's confidante.

the start of this song, in any case, is a sort of exploration of starlight's thoughts around the Season 7 premiere. had she finally outgrown the castle? would twilight send her away?

the middle section is almost an explosion of exuberance. of course, starlight does not leave; twilight throws her a graduation party and starlight is content to remain in ponyville. still, starlight, much like her mentor, is the sort of pony who is prone to worry, and so there is an anxiousness that accompanies her joy. what will the future look like?

the final piano denouement (this is my first time recording myself playing a (real) piano so please be gentle !) is more reflective and pensive. by now, perhaps, we have reached the S7 finale. there is a beautiful moment in the episode when starlight, no longer the unsure student, conquers her self-doubt and corrects her former teacher. twilight may have been blinded in that moment, but starlight realised that stygian is deserving of friendship, not condemnation. the student has become the teacher. it augurs well for starlight's future; she is more certain of herself, more purposeful and at peace.
