Brick Bat Coba Waterproofing is a traditional and cost-effective method used primarily for waterproofing flat concrete roofs in India and other tropical countries. It involves laying specially shaped burnt clay bricks ("brick bats") over a cement mortar layer, followed by multiple waterproofing treatments to ensure that rainwater does not seep through the roof.

🔧 Components of Brick Bat Coba

Brick Bats: Medium-sized broken burnt clay bricks, usually 75 mm to 100 mm thick.
Cement Mortar: Mix of cement and sand (typically 1:4 or 1:5).
Waterproofing Compound: Added to the mortar to improve impermeability.
Finishing Layer: A top coat of waterproof cement plaster or tiles.
🏗️ Step-by-Step Construction Process

1. Surface Preparation
Clean the concrete slab thoroughly.
Ensure all cracks or honeycombing in the slab are repaired with polymer-modified mortar.
Apply a bonding agent if needed.
2. Slurry Coat
A thin slurry of cement and waterproofing compound is applied over the clean surface to enhance bonding.
3. Laying Brick Bats
Brick bats (broken burnt bricks) of around 75–100 mm thickness are laid on the surface, maintaining a slope (minimum 1:100) towards rainwater outlets or drainage points.
Gaps between the brick bats are kept around 15–20 mm wide.
4. Filling Gaps with Cement Mortar
The gaps are filled with a cement-sand mortar mix (1:4 or 1:5) with a waterproofing admixture.
The mortar is pressed and compacted properly to eliminate voids.
5. Curing
The surface is cured for 7–10 days using wet gunny bags or water sprinkling.
6. Top Plaster Layer
A 20–25 mm thick waterproof plaster (1:3 cement-sand mix) is applied on top.
It may be finished with a float or trowel.
7. Finishing and Expansion Joints
Groove lines or expansion joints are provided at intervals to prevent cracking.
Sometimes, a layer of tiles or china chips is added to protect against thermal expansion and UV rays.
