The earliest birds had much in common with their theropod relatives. However, not all theropods were the same. Some of them could fly, which eventually led to the origin of modern birds. But are birds considered true dinosaurs?
“Birds are living dinosaurs,” says Julia Clark, a paleontologist in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin in the US. Despite the physical differences, each animal can trace certain anatomical characteristics back to a common ancestor. “All the bird species we have today are descendants of a single lineage of theropod dinosaurs.”
One of the defining features of birds is their ability to fly, which requires strong forelimbs. Experts believe that flight is what separates birds from their closest non-bird relative, the dinosaur. During the evolution of flight, the small bones in birds' limbs shrank and fused together to create the rigid structure that supports wing feathers. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, birds continued to evolve and diversify precisely because of flight.
