In this video we discuss 2 different ways to format cells, or columns of cells, for dates in excel. We go through detailed examples of how to do this step by step.

There are 2 main quick ways to format cells for dates in excel.
The first way is to left click on the cell you want formatted, here, cell A1, so it is highlighted. Next, go up to this box at the top of the number section near the top of the worksheet, that says it is now formatted for a general number.

If we left click on this down arrow to the right, a drop down box with some options appears. In here we have short date, which displays the date in numbers, and long date which will type out the day and month name. I am going to left click on short date, and then I will type in a date, 8, forward slash, 22, forward slash, 21, and then hit the enter key and the date is input.

And this will work for an entire column as well, for instance I will left click on the column letter C, so the entire column is highlighted. Then go up to the format box again and left click on the down arrow and choose long date. If I click on cell C1, the box above shows date, I will enter, 8/22/21in cell C1, and hit enter, and the long date is input in the cell.

Now for the second way, which is to right click on a cell or column, here, I will right click on column E and a drop down box appears. In the box, left click on format cells, and a pop up box appears. In the box, I will left click on date, and some formatting options appear. I am going to scroll down and left click on the last option. And then left click on ok.

And now I will enter our date of 8/22/21 in cell E1, and then hit enter and the date is entered into the cell.

One quick note, I can left click on the cell, E1, go to the bottom right corner, you can see the cursor turn black, and left click and hold and drag down. You can see that this will fill in dates, day after day.
