Speaking outside of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a press conference to discuss the government's ongoing response to the novel coronavirus pandemic - but ended up fielding multiple questions on Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, the two Canadians who are detained in China.

Trudeau says it Chinese officials, not him, who first linked the arrest of the two Canadian citizens to the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

Earlier today, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters Trudeau should stop making "irresponsible remarks" about its decision to charge the two men with spying.

Trudeau was emphatic that he will not offer a prisoner exchange of sorts to resolve the issue, saying it is a matter for the courts.

As well, federal cabinet ministers spoke after the prime minister provided an update on the state of COVID-19 in Canada.

Canada reported 20 coronavirus deaths in total on Sunday, the lowest daily death toll since April 1, when the country reported 10 deaths in a single day.
