After the Bolshevik Revolution, Vladimir Lenin was only briefly in power due to illness and died in 1924.
Before his death, Lenin had written a will in which he wanted Leon Trotsky to be the next leader of the Soviet Union, not Joseph Stalin
But by then Joseph Stalin was already the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party.
Meanwhile, Leon Trotsky was serving as Commissar for Military and Naval Affairs.
This meant that the opportunity for Joseph Stalin to replace Lenin was in sight.
Stalin very quickly took steps to position himself as Vladimir Lenin's successor.
Trotsky, who thought Stalin was arbitrary, immediately formed an opposition to Joseph Stalin.
Eventually Stalin sacked Trotsky from all his positions and then expelled him from the Soviet Union. Trotsky then moved and lived in several countries.
But even in exile, Trotsky continued to criticise Joseph Stalin.
Finally, Stalin ordered his secret agents to kill Trotsky in Mexico
