This video describes how to write the formula for Hydrogen sulphide from Hydrogen ions H+ and sulphide ions S2- .

Step 1
Write the symbols of the ions - cation first & then anion.

Step 2
Check the charges of the cation & anion. If they are NOT equal, multiply the appropriate ion by a suitable number so that the charges (+ & -) will be equal.

Step 3
Strike out the + & - charges from the ions.

Step 4
Write the formula joining the symbols of the ions together. Polyatomic ion is enclosed within the brackets.

Step 5
Strike out the subscript and the brackets if the subscript of the polyatomic ion is 1. (No brackets for monoatomic ions)
