My journey to this Competition :
To begin with, I was very very late to start my strength training for The Nationwide Nepal Powerlifting Competition. I hadn’t been to the gym from 2076 Falgun after the cases of Corona virus were seen in Kathmandu valley with Lockdown happening in between to 2077 Magh end(10-11 months of Gym gap).
In the mid of 2077 Magh, I saw Sukadev dai’s story about this competition and I thought I should give it a try in my weight class under 59kg. Being Nepal’s first
nationwide game got me even more intrigued. I always wanted to compete in a game and step my feet on the game platform just to experience the environment. By the time I decided to give it a try, I was just 8 weeks out from the competition. Then I stopped making videos for my youtube channel which I just started, completely avoided friend gatherings, nightouts,……to give full focus on the game preparation.
So like after 10-11 months of Gym gap, I went to the Gym just to do some basic strength training, with a mindset that if I do better in my strength program SBD then only I will compete in game. I didn’t have any coach or even knowledge about what powerlifting is and what strength training I have to implement. I just knew Squat, Benchpress and Deadlift events of powerlifting meet. So I began with my 0kg squat, 0kg benchpress and 0kg deadlift. Then I started with some pause squat, pause bench and pause deadlifts with lighter weights, and some accessories exercises like leg press, lats pulldown, tricep movement, and others. Slowly I saw improvement in my SBD. In the 1st week of my training, I did 60kg squat, 40kg bench and 80 kg deadlift which I barely used to do before.
So I set my SBD goal to 100kg Squat, 70kg bench and 120kg dead for the competition. Then I started to push my training intensity because competition date was coming too near. But I could not push beyond 80kg squat, 60kg bench and 110 kg dead in the 3rd week of training. Then I watched tons of youtube videos, Tyson dai podcasts, his youtube, and other bunch of powerlifter videos. And slowly I improved my postures with right technique, I started to the break the plateau. 100kg squat felt easy, 60kg bench going smoothly and 110 kg deadlift felt better in the 4th week of training.
But in the start of 5th week of training, when I started to push my deadlift number from 110 to 120 kg, I had hip flexor injury because my sumo deadlift technique was not quite right. So the whole week I took a break from any leg movement. Basically my 5th week training got wasted due to this injury and the competition was just 3-4 weeks out.
Slowly I recovered from my injury and again started my training from starch with lifting lighter weights in 6th week. Since I already paid and register for the competition I could not back out then. Jo hoga dekha jayaga vandai I started to push my training. Pushing my squat to 120-125kg, my bench to 70-80kg and my deadlift to 130-135kg in 7th and 8th week training. I basically peak at last week before the completion.
But just 4 days before the competition, I suffered from lats muscle pulled injury while doing 130 kg squat because squat barbell was bent and the whole weight got shifted while lifting. I did a very bad mistake to try max out just before competition. So I set my opening for SBD 80kg squat, 55kg bench and 100 kg deadlift just to be in safe side.
Asto teso vandai, the day of weighing and competition day came. Seeing my opponents SBD opening my opening was like a kid attempt. So joga dekha jayaga vandai I changed my opening SBD to 110kg squat, 70kg bench and 125kg deadlift.
With the motivational environment of the competition and energy from audience and caffeine of my pre-workout, I did all my attempts well 9/9. Setting my all-time PR(personal record) in the competition.
Squat 1st attempt-110kg, 2nd attempt – 120kg and 3rd attempt – 130kg (PR).
Bench press 1st attempt-70kg, 2nd attempt – 80kg and 3rd attempt – 81.5kg (PR).
Deadlift 1st attempt-125kg, 2nd attempt – 135kg and 3rd attempt – 145kg (PR).
I did not win the competition but I saw a lot of winners and passionate people towards this Powerlifting Sport. I secured 4th rank in my division under59kg bodyweight and I am very happy with it and proud of myself, for starting from 0kg to this PRs with no coach within overall 6weeks of training.
Very happy that I got meet to my inspiration Sukadev dai, Tyson dai, Ojash bro and other athletes.
I enjoyed a lot that day.
