U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a “massive strike” on Islamic State targets in Syria following a deadly attack that killed three American personnel last week. Speaking at a rally in North Carolina, Trump said the decision came after a suspected ISIS assault on a military convoy in central Syria. The attack occurred near Palmyra, where an assailant targeted U.S. and Syrian forces before being shot dead.
According to the U.S. military, two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed in the December 13 attack, while three other U.S. troops were wounded. Trump had earlier vowed strong retaliation, signalling that attacks on American forces would not go unanswered. On social media, he also claimed that the Syrian government fully supported the U.S. strikes, a notable assertion given the complex dynamics of the conflict.
In response, Syria reiterated its commitment to fighting the Islamic State and ensuring that the extremist group finds no safe havens on Syrian territory. The incident highlights the enduring threat posed by ISIS despite years of military campaigns and underscores the risks faced by U.S. troops still operating in the region.
