Numerical layout optimization techniques have been shown to provide an effective means of identifying the optimal arrangement (or topology) of members forming form resistant structures and trusses. However, although these are known to be more structurally efficient than bending structures, for various reasons real-world building structures typically need to incorporate bending elements. To address this, a recently developed numerical layout optimization procedure for identifying optimal beam grillage structures is here combined with truss layout optimization methods to provide a new holistic layout optimization procedure for building structures.

The procedure is particularly useful at the conceptual design stage, and, to allow rapid evaluation of a range of options, can be embedded in parametric design software. The resulting capability can be applied to a wide range of design problems, from the design of canopy roofs to the design of multi-storey buildings; simple examples are here presented to illustrate this.
