Описание к видео Princess Asbyte | Warriors of History

Silius Italicus's epic poem Punica features Asbyte, a Libyan princess, as a formidable Carthaginian warrior during the Siege of Saguntum. Daughter of Hiarbas, a Garamantian leader, Asbyte commanded Libyan female warriors, including horsewomen and charioteers, equipped with javelins. This depiction aligns with historical accounts of martial traditions among North African tribes, where women participated in combat.

Asbyte's primary weapon was the javelin, and she excelled in horseback riding and chariot warfare, central to North African military tactics. Libyan chariots, known for their speed and maneuverability, were employed for reconnaissance, skirmishing, and swift strikes. Asbyte's chariot, adorned with intricate designs, symbolized her royal status and warrior role.

During the siege, Asbyte's forces effectively repelled a Saguntine sally. However, a Cretan archer, Mopsus, attempted to kill her, but his arrow struck her lieutenant. In the ensuing chaos, Mopsus's sons were killed, leading to his despair and suicide.

Asbyte's final confrontation occurred with Theron, the city's priest of Heracles. Theron pursued and ultimately killed her. Her death was avenged by Hannibal's forces, who killed Theron and recovered Asbyte's body. Her brother, Aquerras, continued the fight alongside Hannibal, but eventually fell at the Battle of Cannae.

Asbyte's story in Punica highlights the contributions of North African cultures to the Carthaginian war effort. Her character embodies heroic ideals, blending historical traditions with mythological archetypes. While her existence may be uncertain, Asbyte's tale reflects a broader tradition of warrior women in North Africa, serving as a captivating symbol of the complexities and cultural richness of the Second Punic War.
