The incidence of gastric cancer (GC) of South Korea is the highest but its mortality is the lowest in the world. The risk of GC developing in males is twice as high as in females around the world but there are sex differences depending on tissue type. Diffuse-type GC (DGC) more frequently affects young female patients as twice as high as males, and is often found at more advanced stages thus shows a poorer prognosis in females. Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection, age, high salt intake, diets low in fruit and vegetables, and exposure to risk factors such as alcohol drinking and smoking are important factors in the occurrence of GC. Two different types of estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ) and androgen receptor (AR) are suggested to play a different role depending on sex. In 2022, DGC was found to be related to ERα. Thus research regarding the effect of sex hormone receptors on the clinical characteristics of GC as well as their potential as a prognostic factor was performed in 74 GC patients and 36 controls in our hospital.
