Ut Phoebi Radiis is a four-part piece based on the hexachord by the great Renaissance composer Josquin Desprez. Desprez was a groundbreaking composer, especially noticeable in Ut Phoebi Radiis in the genius way in which he mixed the text with the hexachord. The two very moving upper voices (alto and soprano) sing the Marian text, while the bass and tenor parts sing the hexachord in canon, the canon in the fourth and very shortly after each other.

Deprez builds up the hexachord city by city from low to high and in the first part and in the second part he mirrors this course from top to bottom. It is a fixed intellectual structure of the hexachord on which Desprez still produces fantastic music.

Ut Phoebi Radiis - Josquin Desprez is the fourth work performed by the ‪@NederlandsKamerkoor‬ under the direction of conductor and early music specialist Paul van Nevel, in which we dived into the world of the hexachord ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la, the forerunner of the well-known do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do on which Western music is based.
