The beginnings of this society are rooted in this very neighborhood. Come explore just a few of the buildings, the surrounding neighborhood, and the people who lived there.

Around 1870 Martha Reed Mitchell, the wife of a multimillionaire railroad tycoon from Milwaukee, came to Jacksonville loved the climate, and bought 140 acres of riverfront property. Here she built a grand estate which she called Villa Alexandria. The interior was decorated with lavish furnishings and works of art. But it was not only the house that was extraordinary, but the landscaping was also an attraction. It was said to have had elaborate gardens, exotic plants, and 95 varieties of roses. There were also tennis courts, a swimming pool, a polo field, and a sandy beach on the banks of the river. Martha Mitchell was a philanthropist and threw glorious parties at her home as fundraising events to benefit St Luke's Hospital and All Saints Episcopal Church. She was also instrumental in forming a Historic Preservation Trust. She passed away in 1902 and 25 years later, the faded elegance of Villa Alexandria gave way to new development. It was in 1929 two homes next to each other were built for John Swisher and his son Carl Swisher, owners of the large Swisher and Son cigar company. One of the homes is built on the site of the tennis courts of the former Villa Alexandria. The homes were designed by Marsh and Saxelby in the Mediterranean Revival style, and these homes stand today as the epitome of the San Marco image. Across the road at 2209 River Road, situated on a corner lot is another Spanish style home. It has a circular tower and a serpentine stairwell at the entrance which makes an unusual feature that was popular in the 1930s Oh, here's a fun fact at the time of making this video. This home was listed for sale for two and a quarter-million dollars. You could easily do a walking tour of historical homes in San Marco because there are several on River Road that are noteworthy. This section of river road faces the water and homes across the street back up to Lake Marco, which was a former clay pit that was landscaped into an artificial lake. The brick and half-timber building of this home reflect the Tudor Revival style. It was built in 1927 and Brown L Whately lived here between 1929 and 1931. He became one of the principals in the real estate firm of Stockton Whately and Davin. Another one of my favorites is the Dr. Bransfield residents' built-in 1928 architect George Homes gave this Mediterranean revival-style home a Venetian flavor with the use of repetitive Ogee arches. After Dr. Bransfield passed away, his son took up residence in the same house on the other side of River Road is an unusual home designed by Bernard Close. It is an outstanding example of the international style of architecture, and at the time formed a stark contrast to the other homes built on River Road. The flat roof, smooth walls, and metal-framed Windows were the style dedicated to functionalism and modernization. It was originally built for the owner of a downtown women's clothing store. The triangular shopping district is named San Marco square after the famous St Mark's Square in Venice. A multi-level fountain sits at the focal point of this area. The fountain was originally topped with a wrought iron compass motif, but during a huge renovation of the square in the 1990s the compass was replaced with the iconic Three Lions statue inspired by the Piazza San Marco amongst the many modern shops, cafes, and restaurants, some original structures. The first commercial building built in the square was the San Marco building, reflecting the same Mediterranean Revival style as many of the homes. Originally this building was twice as wide and had a Spanish Tile Roof. The San Marco theater built-in 1938 with its jazzy Art Deco facade still holds a prominent position in the square. In a similar but rather more restrained style, The Little Theater built by Whatley, Davin and company shows the same art deco so popular in the 1930s
