The Pittenweem Fishermen's Memorial

"Pittenweem Fishermen’s Memorial Association was established with the objective of raising funds to commission, erect and maintain a permanent memorial, dedicated to the men and women who made their living from the sea-and to those who lost their lives in so doing. It will link the past with the present, as it will be sited between the new harbour and the old Westhaven harbour.

The artist is renowned figurative sculptor Alan Herriot DA ARBS, who has designed an emotive piece of art which evokes the nature and dangers of the fishing industry.

Our aims are simple. In the East Neuk villages there is no visible outdoor recognition of the lives lost, or the hardships endured by the local communities especially in the past. Our proposed memorial will help to rectify this omission, and will have a role to play in making future generations more aware of the dangerous work of the fisherman. We also wish it to convey a sense of quiet reflection and remembrance, for those who took part in “the fishing”, and contributed to the history and heritage of the East Neuk."
