Severe flooding in northeastern Australia has inundated roads and prompted hundreds of evacuations.



Days of torrential downpours have left many communities stranded, with up to 27 centimetres of rain falling in a 24-hour period in some areas.



In one town hundreds of residents were flown out by a fleet of helicopters after buildings were submerged.



The water in some areas has risen to levels not seen for decades.
