The Hoysala Temples were built during the 12th and 13th centuries CE, currently located in the Karnataka state of India.
The Belur temple is one of the grandest examples of Hoysala architecture. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana Hoysaleshwara in 1117 CE, and it was built over 103 years.
The capital of the Hoysalas initially located at Belur was later moved to Halebidu, also known as Dwarasamudra. And the Halebidu Temple was constructed in the year 1121 CE.
The Hoysala temples are made out of soapstone, abundant in Karnataka. Its softness allowed artisans to carve intricate details and elaborate sculptures. The Hoysala Temples, are India's 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Site.
