The purring Rolls-Royce Griffon powered Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX, PS853 was bought by Rolls Royce Heritage Flight from the BBMF in 1996. The pilot is Mark "DISCO" Discombe, an ex BBMF pilot, flying this wonderful Spitfire. The PR.19 Spitfires were a reconnaissance aircraft, unarmed and using speed as for its defence. With a max speed of 446mph along with its pressurised cabin, it could operate at a ceiling of 42,000ft.
PS853 was built in Southampton and delivered to the central Photographic Reconnaissance Unit at RAF Benson on January 13th 1945. Transferred to 16 squadron of 34 Wing and then 268 squadron before reforming back with 16 Squadron at Celle in September 18th 1945. Her next unit brought her back into the UK by March 1946 with 29 Maintenance Unit.
With the importance of photo-mapping with Photographic Reconnaissance, she was modified and converted for the role and joined Short Brothers Meteorological Research Flight in July 1950 until 9th June 1957.
PS853 joined the BBMF (Battle of Britain Memorial Flight) on the 14th June 1957 and 1964 until she was sold in 1996 to the Rolls Royce Heritage Flight.
The Rolls-Royce Griffon engine was designed in answer to Royal Navy specifications for an engine capable of generating good power at low altitudes. Concepts for adapting the Spitfire to take the new engine had begun as far back as October 1939; Joseph Smith felt that "The good big 'un will eventually beat the good little 'un." and Ernest Hives of Rolls-Royce thought that the Griffon would be "a second power string for the Spitfire". The first of the Griffon-engined Spitfires flew on 27 November 1941.
Although the Griffon-engined Spitfires were never produced in the large numbers of the Merlin-engined variants they were an important part of the Spitfire family, and in their later versions kept the Spitfire at the forefront of piston-engined fighter development. This article describes the Griffon-powered Spitfire variants.
