Grüningen Castle is a castle in the village of Grüningen in the Swiss canton of Zurich.
The chateau was built before 1229 as a castle. In its early days it was owned by the Freiherren von Regensberg. At the time of the Landvogtei Grüningen, it was the seat of the Landvogte employed by Zurich. Only the Palas and the keep that was demolished from its height in 1783 remain of the original complex. A fire in the church from October 19 to 20, 1970 also damaged the castle. The roof truss and top floor had to be renewed as a result.
The castle, which in the meantime also served as a vicarage, was extensively renovated in 2015/2016. Today, a conference center with conference and meeting rooms is set up on the top two floors. The castle café was opened in the basement. In addition, the castle houses a museum on the first floor, in which various medieval weapons and tools can be seen.
On the site of today's Grüningen Reformed Church there has been a castle chapel since at least 1396, which was expanded in 1610 - the year it was raised to a parish church - and in 1649. This was demolished in 1782 and the early classical style church, which is still largely in this form today, was built in its place until the following year. In the fire of 1970 it burned down to the outer walls and was rebuilt from May 1975 to March 1977.
In the 7th century, the Alemanni settled in the area around Grüningen. Their occupation was the cultivation and cultivation of the soil. An Alemanne who immigrated from southern Germany named "Gruono" gave Grüningen its name and the place name means something like "Green or Gruono" for the descendants. All localities ending in "-ingen" indicate an early Alemannic settlement.
However, Grüningen was first mentioned in a document in 1038. The villages of Itzikon and Binzikon, which belong to Grüningen, can be found in Latin documents for the first time as early as 837 and 854 respectively.
However, other finds show that people lived in the area long before the Alemanni. A poppy head pin found in the Lindist near Grüningen dates from the late Bronze Age around 1000 BC. and the four burial mounds in Strangenholz near Adletshusen/Grüningen from the Hallstatt period 750 to 450 BC. Chr.
