My Mini suddenly wouldn't engage first gear and went into third instead. No surprise this is another common fault on the Mini up to 2004. They fixed it in 2005 with a better connection. I have taken a piece of 1mm steel and cut it 28mm by (28+9+28+9+28) 102mm. I then cut a 9mm slot about 55mm. I pre bent the first angles and put a slight bend in the others to assist. I may cable tie top and bottom if I make it permanent.
