You’ve probably heard people say to get your elbow up, but what does that mean and what does it look like?

Getting your elbow up is the best way to position your arm for a successful power pocket/loading zone/power zone.

To throw the disc successfully, your elbow needs to be out of the way. Getting your elbow up helps with that.

Okay, cool. But isn’t that awkward? That’s not how people throw.

I get what you’re saying, so let’s try something crazy.

Watch Kade hold the disc back while I pull. When he releases the disc, my elbow pops up—out of the way!

This is the kind of position we’re looking for in our throw.

Don’t have a propull? That’s okay! You can do these same movements without a bungee/exercise band. Just make sure you take your time and move slowly to learn the new feeling.

Why?

The term power pocket makes us think we need to form this perfect square, but in reality, our elbow shifts upward like you’re lifting, pulling, or elbowing something.

The disc propels from the pocket and remains on line when the elbow is away.

Propping your elbow up allows a seamless transition of power and momentum into the disc while having your body move in ways it’s designed to move.

When I tried manufacturing my own power pocket, I kept my elbow down, which caused forearm soreness and pain that wasn’t normal.

As soon as I started working on getting my elbow up, I experienced less pain and discomfort because my body is moving the way it’s supposed to—go figure.
