India has once again showcased its growing military power. On Wednesday, India successfully test fired its most advanced missile the Agni V ballistic missile from Chandipur in Odisha. The Agni V is a surface to surface missile, which means it is launched from land and can strike targets on land. The missile was developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), and it can be launched from a canister placed on a truck, making it mobile and easy to transport. Agni V is not only powerful in terms of range but also in terms of payload. It can carry up to 1.5 tonnes of explosives and weighs about 50 tonnes. With this test, India has joined the elite group of countries that have intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capability. These countries include the US, UK, Russia, China, France, Israel, and North Korea. India is the eighth country to achieve this milestone. The Agni missile family has been developed step by step: Agni-I with a range of 700 km, Agni-II with 2,000 km, Agni-III and IV with 2,500–3,500 km, and Now, Agni-V with a massive 5,000 km range. This test has proved once again that India’s defence technology is modern, strong, and capable of protecting the nation against any challenge. Now let’s talk about why this missile test has raised eyebrows in Pakistan. For Pakistan, the Agni-V is a huge concern. Pakistan’s most advanced missile so far is the Shaheen-III, which has a maximum range of about 2,500 kilometres. This is only half of Agni-V’s capability. This means while India can strike anywhere in Pakistan easily, Pakistan does not have the same ability to reach all of India with equal strength. The test sends a strong message that India’s security system is far ahead. With Agni-V, India can not only cover Pakistan fully but also deter threats from China, which is seen as a bigger strategic competitor. Defence experts say this test is not just about technology but also about strategy and psychological power. By showing that it can launch long-range, highly accurate missiles, India is telling its neighbours “Don’t even think about misadventures.” Especially at a time when border tensions with both Pakistan and China keep flaring up, the successful Agni-V test makes sure India’s enemies remain cautious before taking any step. So, while India describes this as part of its “routine user trials,” the reality is that this also works as a strong warning signal for its neighbours, mainly Pakistan, to stay alert.
