In India the collapse of the roof of a stepwell in a temple complex has claimed dozens of lives.

Local officials said Friday that the death toll has risen to at least 35, with 16 people injured, after the roof of a stepwell at a Hindu temple collapsed on Thursday in central India.
The incident occurred at a temple complex in Indore in Madhya Pradesh state.

Nearly 140 rescuers, including army personnel, used ropes and ladders to pull the bodies from the well after pumping out the water, but a narrow path and debris in the well made the task difficult.
Local media reported on Friday that search for one missing person was taking place.


"Thirty-five bodies have been recovered so far during the search and rescue operations. We are searching for one missing person. The army, National Disaster Response Force, and State Disaster Response Force teams are working continuously."

Stepwells are a common feature across India, mostly built hundreds of years ago.
According to local newspaper, temple authorities had stopped using the well that collapsed and covered the mouth with iron grills and tiles.
Municipal authorities in January ordered that the covering be removed because it was an unsafe and unauthorized structure, but temple authorities ignored the warning.

Witnesses said a large crowd of devotees had gathered at the temple to perform a fire ritual and celebrate a festival.
Madhya Pradesh's Chief Minister told reporters late Thursday that the structure apparently caved in because it could not handle the weight of the large crowd.

He said an investigation into the matter had been ordered after visiting the collapse site and meeting the injured in the hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced compensation for the dead and injured.
