The biblical narrative of the Exodus, set during the *Late Bronze Age* (1550–1200 BC), describes a period of significant Egyptian imperial decline. While the scale of the Exodus is debated, a plausible historical core suggests a group of marginalised Semitic-speaking peoples, possibly akin to the "Apiru" or "Shasu" mentioned in Egyptian records, departed from the Nile Delta. These groups, not yet a unified nation, were likely a confederation of tribes who, over time, would forge a distinct identity in the wilderness. They left Egypt with minimal, utilitarian equipment suitable for desert travel, primarily relying on repurposed tools like staffs, slings, and knives for defence. There was no formal military structure at the beginning of their journey; they were a group of displaced individuals rather than an organised army.

Tactically, the Israelites lacked formal training and their earliest engagements were reactive, focused on survival. Their initial organised defence occurred against the Amalekites at Rephidim, where *Joshua* emerged as a military leader. The wilderness terrain favoured *guerrilla tactics* and small-unit skirmishes. Their encampments were organised around the Tabernacle, underscoring the deep link between warfare and their religious beliefs. Though exposed to the sophisticated Egyptian military with its chariots and disciplined formations, the Israelites did not adopt these technologies. They lacked the resources and their tribal structure was not suited to maintaining a standing army. Instead, their combat remained infantry-based, with success attributed to divine favour rather than superior arms. This theological framework of a "holy war" and *Yahweh* as a warrior profoundly shaped their approach to conflict, distinguishing their motives from the imperial goals of surrounding states.
