On The Urban Debate today, Avni Raja discusses the new marriage law which can be passed by the Assam Government. The Assam government is currently mulling to bring in a law that will bring transparency in the institution of marriage.
According to the new law, the couple who plans to get married will have to maintain complete transparency by disclosing their income, occupation, & religion to each other. Disclosure will be mandatory a month prior to the marriage.
State Ministers claim that this is a move to empower women and equality, however, the law has landed itself in a massive controversy as it might bring in unnecessary interference by the government and also might breach one’s right to liberty.
