When you think of dinosaurs, the first film to undoubtedly come to mind is Jurassic Park, a juggernaut of a franchise which has dominated the dinosaur genre for years. While some have tried to compete, it is hard to stand out under the shadow of this franchise, no matter how increasingly berserk it has become. But Australian director Luke Sparke boldly ventures into this territory with a wild, dinosaur-brimming indie film called Primitive War that premiered at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. In a world that needs more dinosaur movies, Sparke has come to deliver, hosting a talented cast of Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) and Nick Weschler (Roswell).

Set during the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Primitive War follows a search and rescue party of soldiers known as the Vulture Squad who are trying to locate a missing platoon in a jungle. They creep through the location, avoiding enemy traps and gunfire, but little do they know, there is another threat lurking on this desolate land: dinosaurs. The territorial reptilean creatures are not happy about the intrusion, and now the Vulture Squad have enemies on all frontiers, desperately trying to survive this nightmare situation.

At SDCC, Collider's Steve Weintraub sits with the team behind Primitive War, including director Sparke and cast members Kwanten, Piven, Helfer and Weschler. They talk about the challenges of making a dinosaur movie, from the big studio names associated with the creature to the realism of visual effects. Filming on an Australian set filled with rain and mud, they also reminisce on the experiences of making an independent film, especially with a director they trust.
