The Severn Bridge…(+ the urban myth of an issue on the original build)

Many men have sadly perished to both build and then maintain her, but this bridge continues to be one of the UK’s biggest civil engineering triumphs - as well as being the first of its type in the world.

Interestingly it was built pretty much exactly where Thomas Telford proposed a crossing to improve rail mail deliveries in 1824!

The main support cables are also staggered and in a V formation (not straight) to also reduce inherent vibration/oscillation characteristics.
