What is Self-Determination? | The most misunderstood idea in International Relations

Self-Determination is one of the most important principles in international politics. However, it's also one of the most misunderstood. In this video, I explore the history and meaning of self-determination and explain why it doesn't always mean what many people think it does.

Around the world, territories and groups seeking independence base their claim on a right of self-determination. However, contrary to widespread perceptions, the notion of self-determination leading to independence only applies in a narrow set of circumstances. Rather than offering a justification for secession, in most cases it instead means that people have a right to a degree of autonomy, or self-rule, within a state. In this video, I explore how the idea of self-determination has evolved over the course of the past century of so. It examines the concept of self-determination put forward by US President Woodrow Wilson after the First World War before analysing how the term came to be understood with the formation of the United Nations, when it had to be balanced against the principle of the territorial integrity of states. Finally, it looks at what it means in the contemporary era.
