차투착 주말시장, 점포들이 하나 둘 문닫고 있다. 2021년 1월 3일 일요일



2020년 1월말, 코로나바이러스 출현이후 나는 차투착 주말시장을 세번 방문했다. 지난 2020년 5월, 10월 그리고 오늘 1월3일 방문한 것이 바로 그것이다. 날이 갈수록 시장내 상인들의 수가 줄어들고 문닫는 점포들이 늘어나고 있다.차투착 주말시장에서 솔직히 내가 살 것은 별로 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 차투착 주말시장은 사람을 불러들이는 묘한 매력이 있다.

차투착 주말시장은 방콕여행자들에게 시장이상의 의미가 있다. 그곳은 시장이라기 보다는 " 태국을 더 잘 이해할 수 있는 소재를 제공하는 특별한 장소"이다. 어떻게보면 차투착 주말시장은 방콕을 가장 매력적인 도시로 만드는 요소중 하나일지 모른다. "태국인의 삶이 녹아들어 있는 곳"이 바로 차투착 주말시자이 아닐까.

세계 어느 도시든지 그곳을 대표하는 쇼핑몰과 시장이 있듯이 방콕도 다를 바 없다. 방콕은 호화쇼핑몰은 많지만 태국적인 느낌을 주는 시장은 많지 않다. 솔직히 초호화,초대형 쇼핑몰은 세계 어느 도시든지 어렵지 않게 찾을 수 있지만차투착 주말시장 같은 성격의 시장은 찾아보기 힘들다. 

방콕은 호화쇼핑몰은 많지만 태국적인 느낌을 주는 시장은 많지 않다. 솔직히 초호화,초대형 쇼핑몰은 세계 어느 도시든지 어렵지 않게 찾을 수 있지만 차투착 주말시장 같은 성격의 시장은 찾아보기 힘들다. 태국이라는 이름이 "큰나라"를 의미하는 것 처럼 태국은 큰 나라다. 차투착 주말시장은 "큰나라"의 축소판이다. 만약 방콕에서 차투착 주말시장이 사라진다면 방콕은 더이상 매력적인 도시가 아닐지도 모른다.

At the end of January 2020, since the coronavirus appeared, I have visited the Cha-Dut-Chak weekend market three times. That is what I visited in May, October, 2020 and today on January 3. As time goes by, the number of merchants in the market is decreasing and more stores are closing.Honestly, I don't have much to buy in the Cha-tu-chak Weekend Market. Nevertheless, the Cha-tu-chak Weekend Market has a strange charm that attracts people.

The Cha-tu-chak Weekend Market means more than just a market for Bangkok travelers. It is a "special place to provide materials to better understand Thailand" rather than a market. In a way, Cha-tu-chak Weekend Market may be one of the factors that makes Bangkok one of the most attractive cities. Isn't "a place where Thai people's lives are melted" the weekend market?

Bangkok is no different, as any city in the world has its representative shopping mall and market. Bangkok has a lot of luxurious shopping malls, but not many markets are such as Cha-tu-chak. To be honest, super-luxury and super-large shopping malls can be found easily in any city in the world, but it is hard to find a market with the characteristics of a "Cha-tu-chak" weekend market. Bangkok may no longer be an attractive city if the Cha-tu-chak Weekend Market disappears from Bangkok.
