How do you repot a bonsai that has not been repot for a long time? Roots solid as wood that you cannot get out of the pot? At some point you just have to break the pot, and rethink your bonsai.

Yes, for this tree, this was the only way.
This tree had been in this pot for a long time, and the roots hd more or less fused. After trying to remove it from the pot the normal routes, we decided breaking the pot was the only way. The rootball was solid, and we had to split it off, after which a new route for the tree was choosen. It was a good class to see this level of repot up-close and learn more about the limits.
