In this video we are talking about Decluttering and Downsizing. We have a lot of clients that are either in retirement or near retirement, and have worked with many out of state buyers who are either building custom homes, or looking for existing home that they can buy with cash or mostly cash to free up more of their equity for retirement.
There are many different reasons that people relocate, either locally or from a different state or country, but usually it is because the space they had is no longer working for them and they are turning over a new chapter and having to make a move to do it.
So why do we accumulate and hang on to so much STUFF and CLUTTER? Well, maybe it is for sentimental reasons, but maybe we are also just busy and have not taken the time to clean out as more things are given to us or brought in. Maybe it is for security, or maybe we feel like we own more with all the things we have around us. Maybe we paid a lot for the things we are having a hard time turning loose of.
Whether you are moving from a very large estate and acreage to something smaller or you are in home where you just want to free up more cash to live on this video will hopefully encourage you to take the first steps forward to achieve your goals.

Here are some practical steps to get things started:
1. Start by tackling large areas and items first. Furniture, appliances, and yard equipment can make a visible impact on your declutter and encourage you to keep going. Progress will help you with momentum.
Miracle Hill will pick up most items. See their website for more information or to schedule a pick up.
2. Create bins for small items (plastic storage bins, plastic laundry bins, or boxes work well for this). Label them DONATE, WAIT, SELL. Make sure you quickly remove items to be donated or sold to get them out of the way.
3. Recycle old computer equipment. Best Buy will take old computer equipment to be recycled. Remove hard drives for security.
4. Store away things you are keeping but do not need out in plastic bins if possible to protect them from water damage.
5. Holiday decor trends change. If you are done with Christmas Decor, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. Give the old items to a family member or consider donating them to a nursing home, school or another nonprofit to use.
6. Sentimental items you no longer have room for can be given to your children or another family member. See if your family wants or can use these items. You may be saving them for no reason.
7. Photos could be reduced by moving some of them to a digital storage like a computer, external drive or thumb drive. If you want to have printed pictures consider getting photo books made. These steps could take some time but would save a lot of space and files can be copied for loved ones and family. Digital photo frames can be a way to display a lot of pictures (and be able to change and update them more easily).
8. Tackle the Garage and yard as well.
9. Consider taking on a DECLUTTERING OR MINIMALISM CHALLENGE
Get rid of 100 items in a week by selecting 15-20 items per day to give away, donate or throw away. These items could be from your closet, drawers, pantry, kitchen or garage. Any size item counts. Just give away or throw away as much as you can per day. Keep a simple list to track progress.
TIP: There are Decluttering lists available online.
Consider taking a one month calendar page and getting rid of 1 item on day 1, 2 items on day 2, and so on. By day 30 or 31 you will be looking for 30-31 items to get rid of. Mark your progress. Did you know by the end of this challenge you will have gotten rid of 450-500 items?
And you could do these challenges multiple times.
