That is the subject of this week's marketing minute.
Why is metadata still important?

Metadata is still important as it's literally what Google uses to catalogue your website.

Despite this, the number of websites that we come across where there is no meta title or meta description it's crazy.

The first thing that Google looks at is the title, and if you leave it up to Google to try and figure it out on its own, it may take a piece of content from your site that isn't optimised to drive traffic to you.

The next thing it looks at is the description. You are losing valuable marketing opportunities to get a short version of your message over to your potential audience by failing to fill this in.

This title and description combination is your first call to action. Failing to get this right, Is a long slippery slope toward a poorly performing website. There is no point driving traffic to your website if it is not the right traffic. The traffic that you want is your potential customers, your potential clients. By getting a meta title and meta description correct and being your first strong call to action, you will be getting better quality traffic to your site.

And here is the best bit.

This is not hard to do. Go into your website, go into the section where you enter the metadata for the page, and update your title and description. You also want to be incorporating your target keywords and key phrases within this small amount of text.

There are a few rules that you should abide by:

·        Your title should be no longer than 70 characters

·        Your description should be no longer than 160 characters

·        You should not just stuff keywords into this section. Write them in a way that appeals to people. Even Google appreciates when it's written for people.

WordPress has many tools and plugins to help you with your metadata, from Yoast to All in one SEO and many more. Each one of these has some great strengths and some weaknesses, but if you don't have something in place to help you, one of these will be better than nothing. These tools will give you a score or rating, they want you to be perfect, but the perfection is based on an algorithm. Use it as a rough guide. If it doesn't feel right when you score 100%, go back and tweak it to make it feel right for you as a person and your audience.
