Tehran, July 14, 2025 – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was reportedly lightly wounded last month during an Israeli airstrike that targeted a secure underground facility in Tehran. The strike, which occurred on June 16 during a high-level security meeting, is now being described by Iranian officials as an assassination attempt.

The facility, located in western Tehran, housed a session of the Supreme National Security Council, where Iran’s top political and military leadership had gathered amid escalating hostilities with Israel. According to intelligence sources and Iranian state media, six precision-guided munitions struck the site’s ventilation shafts, emergency exits, and power lines, effectively trapping those inside.

President Pezeshkian sustained minor injuries to his leg while escaping through a designated emergency shaft, reportedly under heavy dust and debris. He, along with other key leaders, managed to evacuate safely from the heavily fortified compound after several hours. No fatalities were reported, although emergency teams were said to have worked under extreme conditions to extract those trapped.

In a televised interview following the incident, Pezeshkian acknowledged the attack and attributed it directly to Israel. “They tried to silence us, but they failed,” he said, adding that no U.S. involvement was detected in the operation. The president appeared calm but resolute, vowing that Iran would respond at a time of its choosing.

The strike has been likened to the 2024 Israeli operation that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon, indicating a shift in Israeli tactics toward targeting high-value individuals. While Israel has not confirmed involvement, defense officials have reiterated their commitment to neutralizing threats emanating from Iran.

Iran has launched an internal probe into possible intelligence breaches and vowed retaliation. The incident marks a significant escalation in tensions and raises fears of renewed conflict in an already volatile region.
