Did you know Alberta is home to innumerable fossils? Its economy runs on Fossil fuels. There have been many instances of fossils being discovered while digging up for road work for example. During the pre-historic times this regions was near the tropics and part of it was under sea too and hence the huge presence of marine fossils along with dinosurs. Welcome to the land of Dinosaurs, Drumheller. Located in Southern Alberta, and east of Calgary, Drumheller's biggest attraction is the Royal Tyrrell Museum. It hosts Canada's largest collection of dinosaur fossils. It boasts 375,000 visitors a year. I have personally visited this museum a number of times and its always exciting everytime. It is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the study of ancient life. It was opened in September 1985. The museum's personal collection includes over 160,000 cataloged fossils. It displays approximately 800 fossils from its collection in its exhibits. In addition to featuring one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs, the museum also offer a wide variety of creative, fun, and educational programs that bring the prehistoric past to life.

The town of Drumheller is usually bustling during summer with plenty of tourists but as ou can see now, its kinda deserted and the gloomy weather didnt help either. Some of the main tourist attractions include the Star Mine Suspension Bridge, Atlas Coal Mine,Horseshoe Canyon, Horse Thief Canyon and of course the Hoodoos.

A hoodoo is a tall, thin spire of rock formed by erosion. Hoodoos typically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements. They generally form within sedimentary rock and volcanic rock formations. The hoodoos in Drumheller are composed of clay and sand deposited between 70 and 75 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. These hoodoos can maintain a unique mushroom-like appearance as the underlying base erodes at a faster rate compared to the capstones at a rate of nearly one centimeter per year, faster than most geologic structures.
