There is a line of dialogue in Inside Out 2 that was utterly devastating in its simplistic and relevant observation of emotions. I wont repeat it, I’ll let you discover it yourself because you should absolutely go and see Inside Out 2. Like the very best Pixar films it speaks to all of its audience. For the little ones the colourful characters running around and having adventures will delight. For older brothers and sisters the story of Riley’s friends changing school is relevant and can be superimposed onto any and many changes they face or have already experienced. For parents the film is a look at the challenges they faced, or their children will face. So it’s a movie for everyone.

The star of the movie for me is just how the emotions are depicted and the emotional crisis are explained. The new emotions Shame, Ennui, Anxiety and Envy fit in but its really anxiety who has the most to do – the other new emotions are involved but this is really a story about Anxiety. And who among us hasn’t battled anxiety at some point?

The film really does a great job of showing Riley’s uncharacteristic behaviours and explaining them using the conflict of the emotions. The ideas factory for example is something we can all relate to before an interview or first date.

But inside out isn’t a deep contemplation, there are many visual gags and the running gag of seeing the emotions in other characters as well as Riley.

The film is a must see and to honour it here is some footage from Joy, an Ode to Joy if you will.
