First detected near Richmond, Virginia in the 1950s hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an invasive insect in eastern North America that feeds on and kills eastern and Carolina hemlock trees. With conservation of hemlock forests becoming an increasing concern in eastern North America, research and management strategies are looking to use promising west coast specialist predators to develop an effective biological control program. This talk presented by Nicholas Dietschler, research specialist with the NYS Hemlock Initiative and PhD candidate at Cornell University, will review current North American HWA biocontrol research and the ongoing progress to protect eastern hemlock forests, offering hope for this species and those that depend on it.
